Prince - night 1
The artist formerly known as the artist, now just known as Prince played his first of three sold out shows at MSG last night and I was lucky enough to score a ticket. Having never seen his royal highness in concert before, I didn't know what to expect. I've heard many positive comments over the years about his shows and I've seen Purple Rain a good number of times. That era is ancient history now and Prince has stated this is the last tour for many of his golden oldies. So I knew I was in store for a set heavy on the classics, with a few new songs thrown in to provide bathroom and beer breaks.
Anyhow, the show kicked off with the title track from his new CD, Musicology. It's probably the best song on the album and proved to be the highlight of the new material. As it wound down, the lights suddenly went out and that church organ note, you know the one I speak of, began playing. Yes, it was "Let's Go Crazy." The audience went completely bonkers. It was on.
I don't want to say much more as Rajeev is going to the second show tonight and I don't want to spoil it for him. I'm sure he'll have plenty to say about his experience. My one-word summation for the show is this: Fun. Nothing wrong with that. I'll post the setlist and more comments tomorrow.
